School Newsletter – 4th December 2020

Just two weeks to go now before we break up for Christmas – how fast has this term gone? Usually, during these last two weeks, we’d have a non-stop programme of concerts, nativities, parties and carol services but of course this year we can’t have you in school, which is such a shame!

We’re doing everything we can to give the children the same experiences they would normally get, but things like the Nativity and music concerts will be on our YouTube channel instead and the carol service will be just for school and out on the playground.

Food Bank

Thank you so much to everyone who has donated food and chocolate to the food bank – Mrs Athorn has taken two car loads down already, with another two set to go over the next couple of weeks! Staff have also donated lots of food and drink to a Christmas Hamper which Roxanne has kindly offered to raffle off for us – at the moment the amount raised is already over £100 which is fantastic!

Rudolph Run for Barnsley Hospice – Wednesday 9th December (weather permitting)

We are hoping to do the sponsored Rudolph Run for Barnsley Hospice next Wednesday with all monies raised going to the Barnsley Hospice. Thank you to Miss Hepworth for organising it. All children (including EYFS) will need to wear their P.E kit on this day and are welcome to wear a Christmas jumper/top if they have one. As children in EYFS haven’t got their Shawland’s kit yet they can wear any sportswear including tracksuits and leggings.

Christmas Dinner and Christmas Jumper Day – Friday 11th December

Next Friday is our school Christmas dinner and Christmas Jumper Day. We’re not asking for any donations for this non-uniform day, just for the children to wear something Christmassy. We would be grateful if you could book your child’s Christmas dinner on the School Gateway app as soon as you can, so that we can give the Kitchen staff an idea of numbers. We’re extending lunchtime to allow Y5, Y5-6 & Y6 to eat their meals in the hall that day and staff will be eating with their year groups as well.

Wizard of OZ Production – Monday 7th December for KS1 & KS2

On Monday KS1 and KS2 will be treated to a production of the Wizard of Oz – this is will be a show with a difference as there will be one live actor interacting with a large-screen film and it promises to be amazing! We will be having three showings – one for Y1 & 2, one for Y3 & 4 and one for Y5 & 6. This experience, which cost £900 has been paid for by school as a treat for the children after the challenging year they have had. EYFS are having their own festive event.

You have probably heard on the news that this year’s Key Stage 1 SATs have been cancelled, as well as the Y4 multiplication check and the Y6 SPAG SAT test. We are really pleased as we believe this gives every child a good chance to catch up for any lost learning without us having to focus on simply passing tests. Teachers in every year group will be starting booster classes for children in their own classes after Christmas, which we will give you more information about in January.

Parents Evening

Next Wednesday we have our first online parents evening. We based the amount of appointment times made available on the number of requests we received on the School Gateway. We have had more than double the amount of parents/carers than was indicated actually trying to book, so apologies if you have not been able to get an appointment.

If you let school know we will try to make sure teachers can make a phone, or Zoom, call with you during these last two weeks of term.

Finally, thank you for your continued support – not a week has gone by this term without someone taking the time to pass on a message of support, praise or thanks to the Shawlands Team, which staff always appreciate and love getting when they are passed on.

On that note, I am sure you will join me in congratulating Mrs Athorn on receiving a Barnsley Spirit Award in recognition both of her contribution to the school’s Covid-19 response, but also her work with individual children and their families.

As always, please let us know if there is anything we can help with.
