Our 'Maths Vision' at Shawlands Primary School

At Shawlands Primary School, we recognise that mathematics is an important creative discipline that helps us to understand and change the world. We want all pupils at Shawlands Primary School to experience the beauty, power and enjoyment of mathematics and develop a sense of curiosity about the subject with a clear understanding. At Shawlands we foster positive can do attitudes and we promote the fact that ‘we can all do maths!’ We believe all children can achieve in mathematics, and teach for secure and deep understanding of mathematical concepts through manageable steps. We use mistakes and misconceptions as an essential part of learning and provide challenge through rich and sophisticated problems. At our school, the majority of children will be taught the content from their year group only. They will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with new knowledge in multiple ways.

We aim for all pupils to:

become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop conceptual understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.

reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.

be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios

have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics.

1. Well-Planned and Sequenced Curriculum

At Shawlands Primary School, we implement the Maths curriculum by following a structured and progressive approach that ensures pupils previously learnt skills are built upon. Shawlands have developed a carefully devised MTP that details what teachers will be teaching and when. Teachers will adapt and use resources from the scheme Deepening Understanding (as it has a range of highly valuable resources) and use teacher resourced planning to help secure pupils learning. Our curriculum provides clear progression of skills and builds upon important mathematical language. Children will have the opportunity to revisit and practise skills once a weekly by completing weekly skills sheets and times table grids. Children will engage with maths curriculum in many ways, including practically with visual aids and manipulatives, discussions and written work, ensuring that all learning styles are catered for. Teachers will deliver lessons that are well-paced and meet the needs of all learners, ensuring that inclusion occurs in all lessons through the use of differentiation, scaffolded tasks and targeted support.

2, Assessment Strategies

We use a range of formative assessment strategies, such as questioning, quizzes, and discussions, to gauge pupils’ understanding and inform our teaching. This allows target groups to be identified. We also collective summative data once in the last two school terms (all three terms for Year 6) through testing, and weekly through times table speed checks.

3. Celebrating children’s’ work

We celebrate pupils’ mathematical achievements through displays of their work, giving dojos and giving maths certificates for the engagement with Times table Rock Stars and Mathletics. We understand that it is vital to recognise the hard work that the children put into their learning at Shawlands.

With this vision, Shawlands Primary School is dedicated to providing a mathematics curriculum that will help prepare children for the mathematical challenges that they may face later on in regular day-to-day life.
