“The farther backward you can look, the farther forward you are likely to see.”– Winston Churchill
In our approach to teaching history, we emphasise the importance of understanding that history is not merely a collection of indisputable facts, but rather a tapestry of narratives often shaped by those who prevailed. As Napoleon once remarked, “History is written by the winners.” This perspective reminds us that the accounts we encounter are frequently influenced by the perspectives and biases of those in power.
We encourage our students to be critical historians, to question and analyse the sources of historical narratives, and to seek multiple viewpoints. By doing so, they can develop a more nuanced and comprehensive understanding of the past. Our goal is to foster critical thinking and the ability to discern that history, as commonly taught, is just one interpretation of a complex and multifaceted reality.
